ECREA Groningen 2026

The Centre for Media and Journalism Studies (RUG) team welcomed more than 160 journalism scholars for the 5th European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) Journalism Studies conference and PhD Colloquium, as well as a preconference by the Public Tech Media Lab at the University of Groningen.

The conference was expertly managed by the Groningen team, which saw over 28 sessions presented. The PhD Colloquium hosted 20 early career scholars and a publishing workshop with editors from Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Studies, and the Frontiers of Journalism book series.

The opening keynote featured Lenka Waschková Císařová (Masaryk University, Czechia), Lene Heiselberg (Southern Denmark University, Denmark) and Philip DiSalvo (University of St. Gallen, Switzerland); it was moderated by Ansgard Heinrich (University of Groningen). The closing keynote, "The threads behind the trends" was offered by Folker Hanusch (University of Vienna, Austria).
